Time Out
Time Out is an ongoing project that opens up a broader investigation into the relationship between the individual and the roles they inhabit, using sport as a field of observation.
Sport is a space where the body is trained, disciplined and measured through performance. Rules, positions, gestures and results construct a precise representation of the athlete and the role they occupy.
The research begins with a question: what happens to this representation when performance disappears from the image?
The first chapter was developed throughout 2024 in a gymnasium in the Milan area, following a girls’ youth volleyball team. I chose to photograph the players exclusively during breaks in the game. It is within this peripheral time, removed from action and results, that the research finds its space: a moment when the boundaries of the athlete become less defined and something exceeds the role through which we are accustomed to recognising them.
In 2025, Time Out was selected as a winning project of La Forma del Ritratto Open Call, an initiative promoted by the Department of Cultural Policies of the Municipality of Pavia, and exhibited at Palazzo del Broletto in Pavia.
